about

“Waiting to Dance” is a song about how lonely childhood can be for people of queer identities. The song is written from Strip Down’s personal experience of being an awkward, unpopular child until discovering the queer club scene in their hometown, Brighton. There, as a teenager, they suddenly gained access to a subculture where they were fully accepted and liked by their peers for the first time and felt able to express their identity and sexuality.

lyrics

Dancing on your own
When there's no one home
Staring at your phone
Take my shoulder
When you're older
'Cause there's a chance
That we're waiting
Waiting to dance with

(you)
(with you)
(waiting to dance)
(waiting to dance with you)

And that mirror
Will get clearer
And when we're nearer
I can steer around your fears 'cause
You'll take my shoulder
When you're older
'Cause there's a chance
That we're waiting
Waiting to dance with

(you)
(with you)
(waiting to dance)
(waiting to dance with you)
